Philippines is Two Steps Closer to Joining the ATA Carnet System

UPDATE:

On June 23, 2020, Philippines President, Rodrigo Duterte, took a step toward the Philippines joining the ATA Carnet system by signing the Instrument of Accession for the Customs Convention on the ATA Carnet. Sixteen months later, on Monday, November 8^th, the Senate adopted Resolution 832 concurring in the ratification of the ATA Carnet Convention paving the way for the Philippines joining the ATA Carnet system.

This is positive news for the nation and upon full membership will make the Philippines the fifth ASEAN member to become an ATA Carnet country, joining Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore. Although the resolution has passed in the Senate, the Philippines has additional steps to take, one of which is the appointment of a national guaranteeing association.  “It is timely and it is necessary, for it will redound to the benefit of our entrepreneurs, our service providers, the events sector, and our economy as a whole, especially as our nation recovers from the pandemic and our people expand the horizons of opportunity once again”, stated Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
