ANTARCTICA TO BEGIN ACCEPTING ATA CARNETS

June 29, 2007

United States Council for International Business announced on June 29, 2007 that carnets may be used to travel to Antarctica if the customs jurisdiction immediately prior to entering Antarctica is a member of the ATA Carnet system.

For example, if customs clearance is made through a New Zealand customs check point, the Carnet will be an accepted means of customs clearance.  If, on the other hand, the goods enter the territorial claim of Argentina, a carnet will not be accepted as Argentina is not part of the ATA Carnet system.

Antarctica will accept carnets for the conventions the customs jurisdiction immediately prior to entering Antarctica accepts them for.  For example, if customs clearance is made through a New Zealand customs checkpoint, Antarctica will accept the carnet for the same conventions as New Zealand.
