Madagascar is 12th African Country in Carnet System
Madagascar, an island nation off the east coast of Africa, has joined the ATA Carnet system and will begin issuing and accepting carnets on April 22nd, 2013.
Madagascar joins 11 African nations as part of the worldwide carnet system: Algeria, Botswana, Cote d'Ivoire, Lesotho, Mauritius, Morocco, Namibia, Senegal, South Africa, Swaziland and Tunisia.
Although U.S. carnets that are issued and valid may not have Madagascar printed on the list of countries, as of April 22nd those carnets will be valid into Madagascar. If you plan to use a carnet into Madagascar please contact a Carnet Specialist to discuss your needs and ensure that your shipment and carnet will be cleared expeditiously during the first few months of Madagascar joining the system.
As additional information on Madagascar and carnets is available we will post it here as well as on the boomerang carnets® social media outlets.
The addition of Madagascar brings the total number of carnet countries to 73. It comes on the heels of Albania's inclusion which began issuing and accepting carnets on February 25th of 2013. Predicting when new countries will begin issuing and accepting carnets is challenging and often announcements, such as Albania and Madagascar are unexpected. However, because of the high-profile international sporting events scheduled in Brazil beginning in 2014, Brazil is expected to participate in the carnet system within the next 12 months.
